Sample Itinerary

This sample eight-day itinerary combines within it a just a few of the many choices open to you in the Moroccan Sahara that Hassan knows so well. So it’s not just one itinerary but eight and more. Hopefully it will give you an idea of just how much you can enjoy, however many days you want to spend exploring the Sahara and its people in accordance following nature’s rhythms and….. the camels’.

 

Day 1

· Watch the sun set over the Erg Chebbi dunes

· Night in hotel or guest hours - Dinner

· Presentation of overall itinerary with “Berber whisky” (Moroccan mint tea)

 

Day 2

· Watch the sun rise over the of Erg Chebbi dunes

· Breakfast

· Presentation of day’s journey in the desert

· Camel trek crossing the Tisrdmin Wadi (2 hrs)

· Lunch

· Continue by camel to Tisrdmin village and oasis (2 hrs)

· History of village

· Night in traditional Berber tents in desert

· Dinner

 

Day 3

· Breakfast

· Presentation of day’s journey in the desert

· Camel trek across wadi and black rock plateau to the sacred oasis of Safsaf (2hrs 30min)

· Lunch

· Camel trek continues to oasis at your own pace (3 hrs)

· Overnight camp in oasis with dinner, oasis waters, traditional music and history of sacred oasis

 

Day 4

· Breakfast

· Presentation of day’s journey in the desert

· Trek across desert to stay with Berber family in oasis (3 hrs)

· Lunch

· Continue to Berber family in oasis of Azarkam (3 hrs)

· Diner and overnight accommodation with family, living nomad family life.

 

Day 5

· Breakfast with Berber family

· Presentation of new region of the desert to be explored

· Leave for mountains along Algerian border to visit an area rich in the famous crystals known as desert roses (2hrs 30)

· Lunch

· Continue over volcanic mountains of Labrekat (3hrs 30)

· Diner and overnight accommodation with family in tent or under the stars

 

Day 6

· Breakfast

· Presentation of day’s journey in the desert

· Camel trek across volcanic black basalt plateau back towards the Erg Chebbi dunes (4 hrs)

· Lunch

· Continue across sand dunes to spend the night with a nomad family near the Kamkhen dunes, gaining first-hand experience of nomad life

 

Day 7

· Breakfast with nomad family

· Presentation of day’s journey in the desert

· Say goodbyes to nomad family, crossing the dunes and Talghoumt Wadi (2 hrs)

· Lunch with Tuareg family

· Continue across desert to the dunes of Erg Chebbi, (2 hrs)

· Spend last night quietly by the “giant dune” of Erg Chebbi, watching the sunset and sunrise in contact with the sand and stars.

 

Day 8

· Breakfast by the tents

· Short camel trek to the village of Hassi Labiad

· Lunch with family

· Overnight accommodation in hotel or guest house
